This is Cheer Captain, our personal fount of enthusiasm and, well- good cheer. Darn good cheer. So good, in fact, that you can often hear it no matter where you are on campus! Just kidding! It’s not true. Once upon a time the Cheer was indeed raw, but it has become more refined: “yeah, I’m a bit more mature,” Cheer Captain says, when I caught up with her after a Spanish class, which she initially resisted but then joined because her friends were doing it, and is glad she did now, cause “it’s fun.” When I asked her to tell a bit about herself she said she won’t leave her house without putting up her hair and throwing on her hoop earrings. Cheer Captain used to be a committed gymnast, and for a while made the school feel like a big top circus with all her careening, but she’s strictly doing cheer these days; her team is Pink Explosion, and she, unsuprisingly, is a Flier, which means she’s the one who gets tossed through the air (give me an L! Give me an I! Give me a T!).
Cheer Captain has coached a bunch of students here in basic gymnastic movements, she loves to sing and make musical.lys, and she’s adored by her friends, who say they particularly enjoy driving around with her and her mom and singing karaoke real loud out the windows. Cheer Captain says she appreciates that “you can just be you” at HVSS, and we are so so glad that she is she and she is here with us! We might not be able to do a split, or even fit into a cheerleader uniform, but we’re cheering for you anyway, girl, whatever you do.
